WEBSITE REVAMP!

Welcome to the newly revamped website. We have given it a bit of a overhaul, something there has not been enough time to do in recent times. There is now a CD reviews page to which you are welcome to send in your own reviews of new releases as long as they are related to the genres of Punk, Mod, Electro, Indie and new music. Live reviews continue and we now have a superb new reviewer on board by the name of Andy Coles. Andy is a genuine music lover and was also a contributor to the Our Generation books. He will be reviewing the new album from Sheffield's finest Post-Punk survivors Artery 'Civilisation', which I have heard and can promise you is their greatest set of songs yet.
There are also some more reviews of the trilogy within the individual book reviews pages. I will also be adding some more photos to the site in due course and there will be plenty of more regular CD and gig reviews coming up.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that I am now a part of the Vive Le Rock reviewing team so watch out for my reviews in further issues of the fantastic Punk and related magazine.

Sad news!
Ari Up of pioneering Punks The Slits has passed away (yesterday October 20th)...

Ari Up was a free-spirited individual: uncompromising, wild and unpredictable... a true Punk Rocker. She fronted all girl band (until drummer budgie joined in 1978) the Slits from the age of fourteen, touring with The Clash on the 'White Riot' tour of 1977 and later merging a strong reggae influence to their anarchic no-holds barred punk noise and producing the critically acclaimed and influential seminal post-punk album 'Cut' in 1979. Splitting after their follow up album 'Return of the Giant Slits' in 1981, Ari Up (the step daughter of John Lydon) recorded solo material before joining back up with The Slits in 2005. Their latest album 'Trapped Animal' was released in 2009 for which they toured (see gig review of their Sheffield Corporation date on this site).

Ariana passed away following a long illness according to a press release given by John Lydon and Ari's  Mum Nora today.

She will be sorely missed and unreplacable

R.I.P Ari!

A SUPERB UPCOMING EVENT FOR SPACEMEN 3 AND SPIRITUALISED AND RELATED FANS.

Spacemen3/Spiritualised’s Natty Brooker exhibits classic Psychedelic sleeve-artwork in London and Sheffield

15th July – Hoxton Bar and Grill, London (8pm – 1am)

17th July - Smart Art Galleries, 249 Baslow Road, Sheffield (8pm -1am)

HERE IS THE OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE FOR THIS EXCITING EVENT!

British artist Natty Brooker, best known for his collaboration with legendary bands Spacemen3 and Spiritualized, is debuting his life’s work in England for the first time in July 2010. Following similar successful shows in Los Angeles, Berlin, Copenhagen and Glasgow, London is the latest major city to host this fabulous visionary’s work. Further shows may grace gallery walls in New York and various other Arts capitals around the world, where Brooker’s work will be seen as a whole for the first time in 20 years.

Curated by friend and former bandmate Will Carruthers, the show is the culmination of a lifetime’s work for Brooker. “Natty is a genius, pure and simple. His influence as an artist on the British music scene was far reaching. What many people don’t know is that Natty now has terminal cancer, so this will be the first and last time people will have the opportunity to buy his stuff.”

Brooker was responsible for much of the Spacemen3/Spiritualized aesthetic. He introduced founding members Pete Kember and Jason Pierce (aka Sonic Boom and J.Spaceman) to blues and gospel, played drums on the first Spacemen3 album Sound of Confusion, and also appeared on the classic demos release Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To.

It was Natty's iconic Devil and Angel design that adorned the first Spiritualized album cover Laser Guided Melodies, and it was his endlessly recurring ‘threes’ that graced the last Spacemen3 album Recurring.

Putting the show together has been a labour of love for Brooker and Carruthers, having spent months collecting the original art work from around Europe. “Natty had a tendency to give his work away once finished. We’ve spent the last 6 months tracking down fans and asking for the work back so that we can tour with it”.

Pete Kember (Sonic Boom) reminisces “’Gnatty’, as he was known at the time, was always quite the card, an Ace and a Joker simultaneously. He was very early in combining disciplines usually associated with low-brow genres like tattoo work and graffitti. Some of his best work was lost on friend’s walls and the houses he lived in and decorated inimitably. His encapsulation of drug-induced vision was perfectly in sync with the records he decorated for Spacemen 3. They are immediately indefinable yet instantly somehow instinctively recognisable."

Often Brooker painted on wooden boards, plastic sheets, and other discarded objects with whatever was at hand; in biro, felt tip or leftover emulsion paint. Between the scavenged materials and extreme subject matter Brooker’s work is peculiar, unsettling, humorous - and always tipping a wink to mortality.

"If we made the Sound of Confusion , then Natty gave it shape and colour " says Carruthers, “It’s a rare pleasure to be able to show the public Natty’s life’s work, particularly at a time when it’s so precious.”

******************

So, to the evenings in question. In addition to original works, prints of all the works are available as a signed and numbered set of 14 for 1200 pounds. Individual signed and numbered prints are available starting at 150 pounds. Entertainment will come in the form of live music from various luminaries from the ‘out there’ rock fraternity, and various guest DJ spots. If previous shows are anything to go on, this will be a night to remember. Put it in your diary!!!

Watch out for plenty of local press coverage in Sheffield Star, Yorkshire Post, Sheffield Telegraph, South Yorkshire Times, BBC Radio Sheffield and local TV from the week commencing October 19th.  Neil has told me that the official publication date should be the week after on October 26th.
The book (see cover above) will be available in WH Smith (Meadowhall, Sheffield, Parkgate and other stores) as well as HMV, Waterstones and most good local book stores and online at amzon.co.uk.

'Our Generation' sold out at the Parkgate branch of WH Smith's earlier this week!
The book sold out on Wednesday and new stock has now arrived in the store. There are also stock left in other WH Smith stores (1 in Rotherham - 9 in Sheffield and a few in the Meadowhall store etc) as well as Waterstones, Philip Howard books, Rotherham travel centre etc.

Copies are also still available from this site and other online sites, though the first print will soon be coming to an end. So if you want the book for a Xmas present it may be wise to get out there and cop for one sooner rather than later!!

The book will be re-printed next year. The 2nd print will have slight subtle differnces to mark it as a 2nd print. The first print could well become collectable so grab one while it's at a fair price, before the collectors and antique book sellers set new ridiculous prices for the soon to be out of stock 1st print!

NO.10 club in Rotherham closes down!

Really sad and shocked to hear that the no.10 club in Rotherham Town centre is now closed.

NO.10 CLUB R.I.P

The venue's back room Punk, Rock and ska nights have been run by local promoter Mick hill with the help of friends including resident DJ Mandy (DJ Minx), Andy Morton and various sound engineers and mates.

Over the past couple of years, the club has seen some superb gigs with both well known bands adding the venue on their tours and upcoming bands (both local and nationwide) playing exciting sets there: always supported by an outstanding DJ soundtrack from Mandy. Some of the highlights have been Barnsley Punks X-Rippers, UK Subs, Tenpole Tudor (who perfromed the very last gig there), the Lurkers, Vibrators, Monte Carlo Safe Crackers and the 'Our Generation' reunion nights. There have also been some great Punk all dayers, tribute bands, ska nights and a general party atmosphere throughout. The venue will be missed.

This bad news follows the recent demise of Rotherham's promising Rudie Blues bar that also put on some fantastic gigs...Eddie and the Hot Rods, Nine Below Zero (twice), DR Feelgood(twice), 999, Chris Farlowe and UK Subs amongst them. The arrival of the venue in 2008 saw a great upsurge in exciting gigs in Rotherham and now with the closure of that venue and the no.10 club, it feels like an era has come to a close... hopefully a new fresh and equally as vibrant one will arrive soon?

The new live music venue in Rotherham will be at Mondo's and gigs will be starting there shortly with a name change and refurbishment soon to follow. Some name bands and Punk, Rock, scooterist, ska and Mod events may be in the pipeline. Watch this space for details.

BOOK 'RETAIL' AVAILABILTY
If anyone lives in the Sheffield and Rotherham area and does not yet have the 'Our Generation' book, I have signed 6 copies at the Meadowhall WH Smith's store. They are located in the local books section. Also HMV have 3 copies of the book left at their Meadowhall store. Waterstones in Sheffield have some stock available as do the City Centre stores of WH Smith and HMV as well as Rare and Racy.

Neil Anderson's 'Take it to the Limit' book is now at the printers and should be out in October..can't wait!

Rezilos guitarist and 'Our Generation' book contributor Jo Callis has officially left the band. We wish him all the best of luck with all of his future ventures and thanks for being a top Rezilo all of those years.

Slits play Sheffield Corporation Sunday October 11th.

Punk/Dub pioneers The Slits with original members Ari Up and Tessa play the Corporation in Sheffield October 11th...their last scheduled date in the city was just before they split at the Lyceum in 1981.

Theres a review of 'Our Generation' in the latest (August) issue of Rotherham News which is free and is posted out to all parts of the Rotherham region.

Our Generation reader and fan Neil Anderson is writing and self producing a new book about the Sheffield Limit club called 'Take it to the Limit' (Promo poster above)...The book contains many very rare and previously unseen fans photographs of some of the countless bands who played there (many later to go on to great fame - U2, Human League, The Police etc)...There are also lots of first hand accounts from the kids who went along to the club, either to see the bands or to the clubs disco nights.
The book will be available in October and I personally can't wait to read it...It's great to finally see our region start to get some of the recognition of being a part of the Punk and Post-Punk era's history.

Mid 80's Mod band 'The Way (formed by myself and John Harrison - see the relevant page on this site for the bands history and photos etc) have a couple of rare old live tracks uploaded onto the Mods page of the site. They were recorded on an old cassette player back in the day so are quite rough but do manage to capture the live sound and excitement of the bands gigs. I would be interested in what any of you out there have to say about the tracks - good or bad - as I may consider uploading more The Way tracks...There has been some call for a compilation CD of the remaining live sets and Demos that still exist for some time, so maybe this is a possibilty of happening sometime in the future?

...........................................................................................................................................

I need any old Photos anyone may have from the Punk, Post-Punk and Mod Revival era to use on the site so if anyone has any that they would be happy to share with us, please let me know.
